April Foolishness: Book Review and April Fool’s Day Ideas!

March 16, 2015 by Sue Lively

Do you get into some April foolishness on April Fool’s Day with your family?

I have to admit that I’ve never played a good prank on anyone, but been the attempted victim of many attempted whoopie cushion hijinks as an elementary school teacher.

While looking for Spring books for Onetime, I accidentally stumbled upon a fantastically funny April Fool’s Day picture book that has inspired me to try doing some harmless pranks of our own at home this year. Daddy look out!

Today’s post reviews the perfect April Fool’s Day book for your kids and rounds up over 100 ideas for harmless, fun pranks from fellow kid bloggers.

I love the story April Foolishness by Teresa Bateman and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott!
Basically, the grandkids are visiting Grandma and Grandpa at the farm on April 1st.

While Grandpa is busy cooking himself a tasty breakfast, the kids keep coming in from outside telling him of some disaster: the chickens are out, the goats are stampeding and the pigs are helping themselves to the vegetable garden…you get the idea.

The entire time, Grandpa plays it cool knowing that the kids are trying to pull his leg. At the end, though, Grandma fools Grandpa into thinking it’s NOT April Fool’s Day and he runs outside expecting to find disaster, only to find he’s been conned by his own wife!

I love the twist at the end, and my 3 year old son thought the entire book was incredibly funny too! The text is rhyming and engaging and the pictures are colourful and hilarious!

I highly recommend this book for preschoolers and up. As I said – even as an adult, I enjoyed the delightful humour!

I also liked the fact that the prank in this book was completely harmless and intended to be funny – a perfect model for an April Fool’s Day prank.

Thanks for the post. I think it’s important to teach little ones to celebrate small holidays as well the big ones, even if we forget as adults. I’m not a typical pranker, but now that I have permission to be silly with my son, friends and family better watch out!

I think kids get a kick out of April Fool’s Day – sometimes they just need a little guidance about what’s a good prank that won’t hurt feelings or upset others. Thought these were all great ideas. Thanks for dropping by!
